I have been looking at the backyard and the lack of water and how my gardening mojo was slapped around with my leg and heat over the summer break.

Changes are happening.

The no dig area is staying as it is….also the square block in the lawn will be used to grow vegies.

But the other area against the fence and towards the lemon tree…… will be going.

I talked it over with the elf and I want to convert that area to ……..roses. I need some colour in my life and I think its time I smelt some roses, so to speak.

Still have plenty of area to grow vegies for the 2 of us…… my leg isn’t improving and so with not so much to keep on top of as much….. I’ll be able to cope easier. Also with the Elf is bad……I don’t have time to even spank him;P

ROSES!! Lucky you’re talkin’ my language!
They are a good choice seriously, drought isn’t a problem with them, they can get by on minimal water. Heat may burn them at high 30s and 40s, but they get over it.

Yes and I can bring them inside and I can make potpourri and I can grow herbs amongst them.

I feel really egg-cited about gardening again.

You surely can bring them inside. Would the perfume upset the Elf’s asthma ? You can get non – fragrant ones if so.

What has happened to your leg Lucky? It must have been while I was M.I.A.

I think roses are a great idea…very underrated plants in terms of drought hardiness. People seem to think they are delicate little things but some can be as tough as old boots…and yet still provide glamorous and gorgeously scented blooms.

I have had bad legs all my life Horty……. Late last year I went to the doctor cos’ my right leg was so painful……..Now its just in the ankle heel area.

Tendons are swollen and very tender…..sometimes the pain is so bad I can’t hardly walk on it.

So gardening was out over the summer break and with that and the heat…….I became very depressed over it all.

Now I am saying “stuff this” I wanna garden……so changes are needed.

I’m going to be recording all changes on my blog as I go.

Roses eh? If I can add some input, my choice pick of rose for you would be “double delight” but my old school favourite is “Fedelio” but hard to find.

But you knew that. ;)

Lucky, if you want to look at some of my roses, there are millions of photos of them in my Bucket

http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u218/Javlon_album/Roses%20after%20rain%20March09/

Best time to get them is when they are dormant and sold as bare-rooted. They’re a lot cheaper too. It should be end of May and June.

sounds like a good plan. still plenty of veges plus a few more permanent fixtures.

i hope elf is feeling better soon – poor fellow – no more spanking ! LOL.

Might be worth trying to grow something in the garden that will assist in managing the leg condition and pain relief. I have a big book on medicinal plants and have just had a bit of a look for you. If you need any advice whatsoever on the processing of a particular herb for treatment, recommended parts to use and what to do with them, let me know. This book goes through the exact processes on making infusions, decoctions, tinctures, ointments, creams etc in detail.
So far Arnica and Comfrey are coming up a lot but there is nothing here specifically for tendons. The closest I could come up with without reading the entire book (It’s an encyclopaedia, all the medicinal plants are listed alphabetically with a small section on common ailments at the back) was these few…

Sprains & fractures: Arnica, Comfrey (cream or ointment)

Muscle aches and tiredness: Arnica, Thyme, Rosemary (infusion, soak in bath)

Muscle cramps and spasms: Cramp Bark (tincture, external application)

Arthritis & inflamed joints: Devil’s Claw (tablets) Lemon (juice of, drink) White Willow (tablets or decoction) Deadly Nightshade (Yikes! external only – apply plaster in addition to one of the other remedies)

Arthritis associated with acid indigestion or peptic ulcer: Meadowsweet, Celery (infusion or tincture, drink)

Stiff & aching joints: St John’s Wort, Comfrey, Lavender (external, massage)

Gout:Celery (tablets or decoction)

If you want info on any other herbs that have been recommended to you, just give me a hoy. Happy to look up the individual herbs/plants for you.

Pulled up as much as I can in the square plot. Elf is going to whipper snip around the pavers and then I can see what needs doing.

I’m just popping some pics up on my blog of the quackers at the moment.

i don’t think it matters that you had a bad summer in the garden – we all did.

nor is there any real time limits you should be putting on yourself. remember that gardening is just the stuff that happens between other bits of life. generally keep gardening as a hobby and an infill activity.
i reckon if you keep the garden blank this winter and just enjoy watching the birds roam around in it, you will eventually yearn to have stuff growing again, and that is when you should go back to it.
Give yourself (and your leg) a winter off.

really ? – i seem to recall a reasonable tomato haul at your place.
just don’t push a sore leg too hard – that’s all….. and don’t get the guilts if you can’t do everything the mind envisions.

good to hear that you are not letting it all get you down too much. Planning something new is always good for boosting the spirits. Just take it a bit at a time so you don’t overdo it and set yourself back too much. May I suggest getting one or two of the old fashioned hip producing roses? Their blooms are simple but still lovely and you get hips to give colour long after the blooms. And you could make rosehip cordial etc. for yourself or to give away or sell.
