One of their bowling type people is injured. Let him rest for a day or else the others bowl them out later on a wearing pitch.

At stumps: South Africa were 3/134 (Elgar 39, Du Plessis 34) and they hold a commanding lead of 401 runs over Australia. Cummins has two wickets, Lyon, the other.

It’s surprising they are using lead. I’d‘ve thought salt would be a better choice of shot, given Australia’s gaping wound.

Indeed, Australia and South Africa have had rather a perverse relationship in that regard, each of them dominating “away”.

CRICKET
Alastair Cook: we suspected Australians of ball tampering
Josh Burrows
April 25 2018, 12:01am,
The Times

Alastair Cook has admitted that England suspected Australia were ball tampering during the Ashes.

The former captain claims that suspicions were at their peak during the third Test in Perth, where Australia’s fast bowlers started to generate noticeable reverse swing despite conditions that were not obviously conducive to it.

Asked yesterday if he had suspected that Australia were doing anything untoward with the ball, Cook said: “Yeah, a little bit, we did think in Perth, when the outfield was wet after the rain they managed to get the ball reversing.”

England, who lost the Ashes 4-0, did not make public their concerns at the time but the players were not wholly surprised when the ball-tampering scandal was exposed last month during Australia’s Test series in South Africa.

Steve Smith has since been sacked as Australia captain and is serving a one-year ban from professional cricket in his homeland while David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, the two players identified as conspirators, have been banned by Cricket Australia for one year and nine months respectively. The punishments were laid down after Bancroft was caught on camera in Cape Town trying to hide a small piece of sandpaper down his trousers.

England were bowled out for 218 in the second innings in Perth in December and lost the Test by an innings and 41 runs. Cook said that the England players became suspicious during the match because, despite their own careful management of the ball, the visiting fast bowlers were not able to generate the same sort of movement through the air.

“I didn’t see anything,” Cook said. “ we’ve been pretty good on the ball, managing the ball so that it can reverse swing at certain times . . . Jimmy is obviously very good at reverse swing. We got it going a touch at Melbourne either way, but with those drop-in pitches we didn’t get it going massively.”

When reverse swing occurs naturally, it is usually in dry conditions, when the abrasiveness of the square enables a team to let one side of the ball become extremely rough. Swing is then generated because of the contrast in the way the air flows around the rough side and the polished side of the ball. Cook admitted, however, that the extra pace of the Australian bowlers may also have been a factor.

“There’s also that thing about whether reverse swing comes the quicker you bowl the ball,” Cook said. “That was the thing back in 2005 , and obviously in England we had Simon Jones and Freddie who were quicker than the Aussies — and they managed to get the reverse swing and the Aussies didn’t. So we have to be very careful there. We were curious in that series at certain moments — but we couldn’t get the ball up to 90mph and they consistently could. No one really understands.”

Since the ball-tampering scandal emerged in South Africa, Cricket Australia has claimed that Smith, Warner and Bancroft — all batsmen — were the only members of the team in on the plot, and that the Cape Town Test was the first time that they had tried to doctor the ball. Asked if he thought it was surprising that Australia were caught ball tampering supposedly the first time that they attempted it, Cook smiled and replied: “You said it, yeah.

“Sometimes under the pressure of playing, when it feels so important to you because it’s your profession, your livelihood, sometimes winning or losing can take over. It’s wrong for anyone here in the cold light of day to criticise because people do make mistakes . . . but it’s the predetermined part that caught everyone out.”

Whether because of reverse swing or not, Cook suffered a lean winter with the bat. In an otherwise quiet Ashes, his unbeaten 244 in Melbourne proved that he is not finished as an international opening batsman, but he then made 23 runs in four innings against New Zealand.

Since returning to England he has been rested for the first two matches of Essex’s County Championship title defence but will return on Friday, against Hampshire at Southampton. After his time at home, he was speaking yesterday at an event to promote the return of Yorkshire Tea National Cricket Week, from June 18-22 in association with Chance to Shine, the charity.

“The last six months, I’ve never been quite so inconsistent, but I still averaged 47 last year. I could still average 47 this year,” the 33-year-old said. “Go back to India 2011, I was averaging five in the first two Test matches, ended up with 290 at Edgbaston, and the whole series changed. But since I’ve come home I’ve started to look at my preparation. Have I got my preparation right? Do I need to change things? Because that’s the right way to do it. I will never sit here and say I’ve cracked the game or will ever be perfect.”

That he is still willing to tinker with a method that has brought 12,028 runs in a 154-Test career is an indication of how much he wants to retain his place. He says that he would be hurt if he were dropped, a scenario that seems unlikely (even with a new national selector in Ed Smith) given that there is not yet an obvious replacement emerging.

“If someone taps me on the shoulder and tells me they don’t want me to open the batting for England it is going to hurt because I want to carry on,” Cook said. “But it’s job. I am sure he will have some different ideas so we will wait and see.

“My job never changes — it’s to score runs at the top of the order and if you don’t there’s been times throughout my career where people have questioned my place, like they are questioning it now. If you play 100-odd Test matches, there’s going to be little periods when you don’t score the runs. I’ve always managed to turn it around.”
