The Coalition has notched up its 30th straight Newspoll loss, prompting the prime minister to urge his dispirited colleagues to keep their focus on Labor and the next federal election contest.

The latest survey published by the Australian on Sunday night has Labor ahead of the Coalition on the two-party preferred measure 52% to 48%.

Malcolm Turnbull is now only two points ahead of his opposite number, Bill Shorten, as preferred prime minister, leading 38% to 36%, and the Coalition’s primary vote is on 38%.

This week’s Newspoll – while just another bad poll in a long, negative trend – has loomed as a milestone because Turnbull had used Tony Abbott’s sustained poor showing in the survey as one justification for launching a successful leadership coup in 2015. Turnbull cited Abbott losing 30 Newspolls in a row as a reason to move against him as leader.

Will the Coalition stick with Mr Trumble for the rest of the year or bring on a sub?

I’d like to see Sir Pository of Wisdom have another bash just for laughs.

I’m sure they’ll engineer some crisis and win the next one. They have a knack of managing to be ahead for like two months at the right time.

Well, they can always count on the ALP to indulge in some vicious, suicidal, self-centred, and very public factional infighting just in time to make themselves look unelectable for the next election.

Not going to happen (he said moderately confidently). They put in rules after the Rudd/Gillard gore fest. Coalition’s relying on a Kill Bill strategy and it aint workin… they’ll probably switch to a Hateful Eight one.

How does a 48-52 poll reflect the fact that politics is boring? What do you think the numbers would be if politics is more exciting?

I remember politics was pretty exciting, hilarious even, in August 2015 when the polls were 46-54.

There should be a poll for boring or exciting politics.

Although the Coaltion seems more stable than when Abbott was PM, I dislike the hypocrisy of Turnbull. He used “30 poll losses” as an excuse to overthrow Abbott yet when he loss 30 polls, it’s all good, nothing to worry about, polls don’t matter.

The other thing I’m confuzzled about is how the Coalition can lose 30 polls yet Turnbull is the preferred PM.

With one they like the leader, but they don’t like the policies.

With the other, they like the policies, but they don’t like the leader.

opposition leaders normally have a poor rating as preferred PM, usually not till they get into the job that you know if they are any good at it.

You should find some graphs, prepared to be corrected but last time I checked the stats, the coalition had consistently higher rates of immigration of all sorts.

Because he is personally popular.

This is the major difference between his situation and Abbott’s. At the time when Abbott was deposed, his approval was at 26%. He was hugely unpopular so it was reasonable to think that he was weighing the party down, and that replacing him would lead to the party improving its position (which, indeed, it did).

Turnbull on the other hand is well liked generally and funnily enough is probably the most popular Liberal in parliament. Replacing him would probably not help them. Their core problem is that most ppl don’t want what they’re selling.

Yes, and Turnbull is too weak as a leader to change that direction.

Parliament is not sitting this week, so they are not all in CanB sitting around having meetings. They are all at home or rooting their office staff.

It’s 30 consecutive newspolls. There was a period where it turned around. And Abbott has his 30 consecutive newspolls.

“It’s Mr Turnbull who said 30 Newspolls is a definition of success. That’s his problem,” Mr Shorten told reporters in Perth.

That and Turncoat’s adoption of Abbott’s positions on climate change policy, SSM, NBN etc was settting himself up to fail.
