Apparently Tamb has no way of accessing the internet and posting here while in hospital.

I’m wondering if anyone has a surplus tablety device they could donate, or whether we could chip in and get him one.

I’m purely a desktop man and know nothing about these hand-held internet devices, and how practical a tablet or smartphone would be for Tamb in his present condition.

Well SL is best placed to answer those questions but if there is WiFi in the hospital this little elcheapo would do the trick.

They have less expensive options (a Lenovo 7” tablet for $50, a Pendo 7” for $39), so it would be up to y’all whether to go for those. They are probably fine, but obv Samsung is a bigger brand.

Samsung are good. I’ve had a Samsung tablet for a few years, and it’s had no problems at all (touch wood).

Tamb and Curve can compare hospital meals.

I have been chatting to a family member and it is their belief that an android tab with 3G ( so it has its own sim) might be the easiest way.. You might even be able to do prepay or something, that way it’ll be easy for him to use it with his phone (which is android)..

Now I am heading off to visit him on Friday.. I can go pick up whatever you guys decide from JB HiFi or Harvey Normal and grab one and give it to him then. I can sent a copy of the receipt to a forum member either via email or FB PM..

iPad gives good service. No need for a telco account as such, 50 bucks gives 12 months of use with about 5 gig I think which lasts ages for foruming, reading news, paying bills. Nothing too small, those all singing dancing phones are a pain in the arse to type on. Sometimes community organisations and hospitals can lend devices, speak to the patient advocate if that is appropriate.

I’ll kick in as the forum decides which way to go.

a bluetooth mouse to go with it.

and a tablet cover to stop scratches.

You don’t need a SIM if there is WiFi available and if WiFi isn’t available, if you have a reasonably modern phone you can use that as a WiFi hotspot and use the internet connection from that…

Just had a quick squizz, tablets, ie not Apple are pretty cheap. I suppose if you got an all in one plan it would work, so long as it could be done with an initial payment, or at least check with Tamb he idol being loaded with a liability. In all instances, someone needs to provide ID and sign.

Google says Cairns does have free wifi hotspots, including in or near the hospital, but it’s capped at 30 mins per day.

A data plan might be the better idea. I know Aldi has them cheaply but they need to post the SIM, they don’t sell them In store as they do regular phone SIMs.

Telstra have data only plans, however they are on contract. Their cheapest is $15/month for 1 GB. You could probably walk into a Telstra shop and get a data SIM. Kogan also have good plans, but they send out a SIM.

I listen to ‘radio’, too – but not Australian radio.

The internet gives us access to feeds from thousands of radio stations around the world. It doesn’t take anyone long to work out that Australian radio, ABC included, sucks hugely by comparison with what’s available in a lot of other places.

That’s the exact same tablet that I’m posting this from.

The on-off button on that model doesn’t work, failed very fast. I can only switch it on by plugging it into a charger, and can only switch it off by time-out.

It’s good enough for internet and games but not much else.

When I left yesterday after giving Tamb a quick lesson on the tablet he was in the process of organising to get home. This is good news.

However he is still on, in his words, happy juice. So the lesson may need to be refreshed and that is where some of his family may need to assist.

Harvey Norman was offering a good deal on them a couple of weeks back, when my last PC’s motherboard began to die.

I think the problem is simply that Tamb has been relying on his computer to log him in for so long that he is lost without it. We all know he can transfer it, if he remembers how to.

Last we heard Tamb was on his way home but presumably there was a change of plan.

I’m assuming he’s still in hospital and can’t log in due to password problems.

Any new news of Tamb’s welfare?
