Subject: A Tablet for Tamb?
Apparently Tamb has no way of accessing the internet and posting here while in hospital.
I’m wondering if anyone has a surplus tablety device they could donate, or whether we could chip in and get him one.
I’m purely a desktop man and know nothing about these hand-held internet devices, and how practical a tablet or smartphone would be for Tamb in his present condition.

Well SL is best placed to answer those questions but if there is WiFi in the hospital this little elcheapo would do the trick.
Just type in the URL below into your browser.

I’d be in favour of a crowdfunding model. If there’s someone near Tamb now who knows what is locally available and provide a price, we can chip in. Who would be that person?

At the moment, we only have SL, while Tamb is still in Cairns. This is the time.

If we wanted to get something new (might be a good idea as it will be under warranty and so forth, it would be annoying for an ill person to have a device that’s unreliable) then at the Cairns Officeworks they have a Samsung Galaxy 7” tablet for $179.
They have less expensive options (a Lenovo 7” tablet for $50, a Pendo 7” for $39), so it would be up to y’all whether to go for those. They are probably fine, but obv Samsung is a bigger brand.
I’d be happy to be in for a share.

I can find something.
I think we just need a bank account and someone to organise an online purchase and an officeworks delivery.

Also, is it best to organise delivery straight to the hospital? Do we have the bed number and stuff? Might it not be better to send to Spidey?

Before we make any decision we should make sure Tamb will use it. If he’s used to a desktop a tablet might be a big change.

Need to find out if the hospital has free wifi though.
And how long he’ll be there although for $50 I suppose it doesn’t really matter.

Well he lived alone with his dogs (which are presumably being looked after) and posted here every day, with no coercion involved, so I was thinking he might well be missing a bit of chat with this mob.
But it’s probably best to wait until Spider Lily can ask him if he’d be willing and able to use a tablet. Apparently he was finding it painful to sit up.

As usual the forum pulls together.. this is why I love you guys :)
I have been chatting to a family member and it is their belief that an android tab with 3G ( so it has its own sim) might be the easiest way.. You might even be able to do prepay or something, that way it’ll be easy for him to use it with his phone (which is android)..
Now I am heading off to visit him on Friday.. I can go pick up whatever you guys decide from JB HiFi or Harvey Normal and grab one and give it to him then. I can sent a copy of the receipt to a forum member either via email or FB PM..
Then whoever wants to contribute can donate to my bank account..
How does that all sound?

iPad gives good service. No need for a telco account as such, 50 bucks gives 12 months of use with about 5 gig I think which lasts ages for foruming, reading news, paying bills. Nothing too small, those all singing dancing phones are a pain in the arse to type on. Sometimes community organisations and hospitals can lend devices, speak to the patient advocate if that is appropriate.
I’ll kick in as the forum decides which way to go.

Do you have a secure way to give us your account details?
Last time I gave people my bank details they sent all kinds of things to my bank account, discarded furniture, recycle bin contents, old dusty books, attic rubbish.
It took me weeks to clean my account.

Not sure if any tablets can plug into a modem (but can’t say I actually checked) you can get 4G capable ones they require a sim card and a plan and aren’t cheap.

You don’t need a plan as such, I just went to a Tesltra shop got a sim, they needed my driver license or ID, put 50 bucks down which was I think 5 Gig, lasts for 12 months, gave them four or five hours (it’s not instant) and you are connected. Can be topped up at newsagncies or supermarkets or online.

I got mine through my Vodaphone and got a really decent deal, costs me $27 a month for the data allowance and the tablet, can’t buy the tablet outright for the same price they offer

You don’t need a SIM if there is WiFi available and if WiFi isn’t available, if you have a reasonably modern phone you can use that as a WiFi hotspot and use the internet connection from that…

Just had a quick squizz, tablets, ie not Apple are pretty cheap. I suppose if you got an all in one plan it would work, so long as it could be done with an initial payment, or at least check with Tamb he idol being loaded with a liability. In all instances, someone needs to provide ID and sign.

You can get an adapter cable that plugs into the micro/mini USB port on a tablet and plug in a USB stick or portable hard drive and it reads the data on it, need a specific program to recognise an external drive has been mounted. It can supposedly power a mouse as well but not sure if it would work for a modem and even if the modem would work in than manner

It gives you the ability to watch or listen to stuff from another storage device. You can plug in portable drive with a Terabye of storage something the tablet doesn’t offer

Google says Cairns does have free wifi hotspots, including in or near the hospital, but it’s capped at 30 mins per day.
A data plan might be the better idea. I know Aldi has them cheaply but they need to post the SIM, they don’t sell them In store as they do regular phone SIMs.

Telstra have data only plans, however they are on contract. Their cheapest is $15/month for 1 GB. You could probably walk into a Telstra shop and get a data SIM. Kogan also have good plans, but they send out a SIM.
Have we decided on a tablet?

I listen to ‘radio’, too – but not Australian radio.
The internet gives us access to feeds from thousands of radio stations around the world. It doesn’t take anyone long to work out that Australian radio, ABC included, sucks hugely by comparison with what’s available in a lot of other places.

That’s the exact same tablet that I’m posting this from.
The on-off button on that model doesn’t work, failed very fast. I can only switch it on by plugging it into a charger, and can only switch it off by time-out.
It’s good enough for internet and games but not much else.

Commonish retail trick, advertise something online/catalogue/TV/wherever, don’t have it in stock (or keep minimal units), then upsell to something with a better margin as the person is already in the ‘buy’ mode…HN are well known for it.

I refuse to go to HN anymore. Their in-store prices are often different than online prices so you think they’re giving you a discount when you purchase something in-store. I called them out on being sneaky and manipulative but there’s nothing illegal because they give you the lower price anyway.
However my complaint to the ACCC about Domino’s $5 pizzas seems to have resulted in Domino’s changing their offers.

So I see we still haven’t heard from the man in question..
When I left yesterday after giving Tamb a quick lesson on the tablet he was in the process of organising to get home. This is good news.
However he is still on, in his words, happy juice. So the lesson may need to be refreshed and that is where some of his family may need to assist.
Thanks again to everyone who assisted in getting this to happen. I was very happy to do the footwork :)

Why do you need such a high-end laptop?

I got one of them.
Harvey Norman was offering a good deal on them a couple of weeks back, when my last PC’s motherboard began to die.

I suspect he has no idea what his password is.
I was going to suggest, and should have, that Spider Lily contact cb88 and get a temp name and password for him.

Clearly a translatot may be required.

I could, I suppose, but then I’d have no way to inform Tamb. I think SL would need to strep up again.

I think the problem is simply that Tamb has been relying on his computer to log him in for so long that he is lost without it. We all know he can transfer it, if he remembers how to.

Maybe share the workload?
You contact cb88 and then Ms Lily can contact Tamb.

Last we heard Tamb was on his way home but presumably there was a change of plan.
I’m assuming he’s still in hospital and can’t log in due to password problems.
