Astronomers Have Found a Record-Breaking Pair of Stars Orbiting With a Dizzying Speed

Astronomers have discovered a record-breaking star system. It’s called IGR J17062-6143, and it’s a very compact binary, where one of the stars is a rapidly spinning, superdense neutron star called an X-ray pulsar.

Let’s see how that compares. The contact binary CE Leo had an orbital period of 18.3 minutes in 1989, this has since lengthened to 18.8 minutes.

So, closer binaries than IGR J17062-6143 are known.
