Not increasing so much in Australia. Unfortunately, the Canberra fires cause a redefinition of what “directly adjacent” means in Australia. That led to wrong advice.

The other problem in Australia is the reduction of back-burning. More fires (from SciAm article) does not equate to more damage.

Fortunately we still refer to them as bushfires here. Temptation has been resisted to americanise, although there was an attempt some years ago.
