Is that good or not??? Layer pellets was $22.90 for 30 kilo.

Missed out on wheat screenings “by that much”………….. $19.90 for 40 kilo.

We used to sell wheat etc when we owned the general store, but we sold that in 2002…can’t remember the prices, but I think they were somewhere between $15 and $20 for a 40kg wheat.

Yep. I seem to remember that we sold layer pellets for about $12. Must ask OH he pays when he buys ours. We actually now mostly buy a grain mix with a few pellets mixed in. But as our chooks free-range we don’t go through huge amounts. Also with kitchen and garden scraps to supplementn they do pretty well

chuckle – my littl’ darlings are always starving.
it used to be $16 per 40 kg bag from the fodder store and $12 per bag from the farmer.
so in the past 1-2 years it has almost doubled.
i complained at first – now i just grin and bear.

But through the feathers, how do you tell if the chookie is fat?

We just went in on 3 way split into a ton of feed wheat. We got 2/3 and a mate got 1/3, we paid $180 for the ton, we personally paid $120 for 2/3. We got 18 bags, he got 9, so i guess that works out at $6.70 a bag. The bags were about averaging 30-40kg a bag.
Its worth going in with a few mates and buying direct from the farmer. A syndicate has better buying power, and you can buy by the ton or two ton, which is far far cheaper. Start collecting thoes bags!

You can pick up 2nd hand wheelie bins, which are ideal as they are mouse proof and mobile, all my chookfood is in plastic or metal, as we are near the farmers sheds and rats are an issue. All my grain is in wheelie bins ( the big ones 240L), and my layer pellets are in a 2nd hand blue top recycle wheelie bin. So i can store 2/3 of a ton of wheat in 3 big wheelie bins under the verandah, and they can be moved about. We are thinking of buying a couple of new wheelie bins at $70 each, so we can order a whole ton to ourselves.
And a good morning to you all.

interesting.
so you bag them first and put the bags in the bin.
i have one spare big bin currently holding the mash (bran and pollard)
i have 9 hens and 1 rooster.
most of them have been swapped or given to me and i wouldn’t have a clue as to the breeds. my chooks revolve between pens and i plant gardens into the fertile desert they leave behind.

I’ve got a couple of galvanised old fashioned bins plus a plastic one, but a wheelie bin sounds a good idea. But how do you reach the stuff at the bottom of them? It is further than the reach of my arms…
