A massive router malware attack has been spotted by security experts, infecting many home routers around the world, and there’s a very good chance yours is one of them.

It’s not just routers, either. Along with routers made by Linksys, Netgear, TP-Link and Mikrotik, network-attached storage devices (NAS) made by QNAP have also been targeted.

Researchers from Cisco’s Talos security unit put the pieces together on this one, discovering hundreds of thousands of devices have been hit by malware called VPNFilter.

1.Use strong passwords and change passwords where infections are suspected.
2. Never use the same username or password, every username and password should be unique.
3. Never write down or keep on an electric device your usernames or passwords or any indication which one is associated with the other.
4.Make sure you run regular security updates, not just on your computers but also on routers and NAS devices.
5.Turn off remote access features if you don’t use them.

Does re-booting my modem late on on Monday afternoon count?

re-booting is not the same as a factory reset, which is recommended. rebooting will do nothing. i also doubt home use router user need worry about this.

Yeah but, the FBI are tellining ust to re-boot, not re-set. I’d hate to get into trouble with the FBI.

How can we trust the FBI, that this isn’t some of their bugging software waiting to be installed next time you reboot your router?

I think it was the Papua New Guinea FBI.

I hope my Router is ok, I haven’t rebooted it.

While it’s true that rebooting your router won’t remove the infection completely, it’ll cause the malware to try to download the payload again; the FBI calim they’re monitoring sites of interest, and the surge in downloads on one particular site will give them information about which site’s hosting the data, and who’s responsible for it. To completely remove the malware the router needs to be reset to factory settings, then reconfigured and the passwords changed. The malware depends on the tendency of most people, including IT professionals, to leave router credentials unchanged.

I make no secret of the fact that I have close associations with both the CIA and the FBI.

Well it’s actually the FIB, but I’m sure that must be the organisation that people are talking about.

Mine is a different model. But a router malware would help to explain why both computers slow down at the same time.
