Any drone pilots here? I bought a Phantom 3 a while back as a starter drone. I think I’ve now completed my apprenticeship so I’m looking at getting something better. It looks like being either a Mavic, or Phantom 4. I like the Mavic for its portability but the camera doesn’t seem so great. The Phantom 4 has a great camera, but it’s a bulky unit.

Does anyone have an opinion about this? Are there others I should be considering?

How about the F-4 model of the Phantom drone?

This website agrees with you. http://www.dronesglobe.com/guide/best-drones-2018/ Phantom 4 or Mavic.

This website also agrees. http://au.pcmag.com/drones/37261/guide/the-best-drones-of-2018

I’ve never flown anything other that doesn’t flap its wings.

I’ve flown kites that actually confused kestrels.

Another vote for the Mavic Pro here. I don’t have one but they do seem to a very good thing. (I really want one!) Much easier to carry around with your travels than a Phantom.
My drone is just a LITTLE bit larger and heavier than a Mavic or Phantom – It’s a DJI F800 (An F550 with longer arms, to make it about 800 mm diameter) with six of DJI’s E800 motors and 330 mm props. In the photo you can see the big battery I got for it, it’s a 16,000 mah unit and it a good 2 kg by itself. The copter will lift that with complete ease and gives it a ~30 flight time.
But I’d still prefer a Mavic as they have about the same flight time, a better camera, and is vastly lighter & easier to drag around.

One thing I learned from the rotor testing people at CSIRO is that the larger the rotor the greater the lift you can get at lower power.

I have never yet seen a drone for sale where the rotor diameter is even close to as large as it could be. The rotor diameter can approach twice the distance between rotors. The downdraft from one rotor then interferes with the rotor below, which would affect stability slightly, but good software ought to be able to correct for this.
