F**K Mars

Link sent by my daughter.

Warning:
This link contains derogatory references to Elon Musk and Donald Trump and a couple of swear words that some people may find offensive.

Sort of interesting disconnect between the like/dislike ratio and the comments. More likes than dislikes, but the great majority of commenters think the video misses the point.

I think that people who think the video misses the point are missing the point of the video.

Bill is right.

Mars is a very second-rate place.

And we should be making sure that we take care of this planet, before we go plonking ourselves on another one. If we can’t look after the one we have, what’s to say that we won’t screw up the second one as well?

We still need to keep this one in shape. It’s not like we can all bail out and go to a new planet, even if it was equally as habitable as this one (which Mars most definitely is not).

I watched a bit of it before I turned it off, too much offensive language, so I didn’t see enough of the clip to give an objective opinion one way or the other.

That is true but would you go to try and start a colony representing the best humanity has to offer and not (however unlikely) repeat the mistakes of the past. I imagine without cooperation you’d soon die and we’d still have individual clashes but perhaps not racial hatreds and the like. It might suit people who generally are annoyed with the vast majority of the human race but get along with like minded sensible people

Questions:

Who decides who gets to go? Who decides on who is ‘the best humanity has to offer’? The people stumping up the money for it (e.g. Mr. Musk)? Why are they going – to further the knowledge and capabilities of all of humanity, or to set up a comfy bolt-hole for their wealthy patrons? What happens to the co-operative and egalitarian society established on Mars when the ‘elite’ ,with their strong sense of entitlement, decide to join them?

True, but it may also be a bolthole if/when this planet faces some unstoppable catastrophe.

Having at least some small settlement on Mars might be wise insurance.

Chuck the elite out the airlock if they act entitled.
Would if ever be a bolt hole for the wealthy, you would fair better on Earth even if it went to shit as you at least have an environment you can live in without life support systems

Why not build a bolt hole here, for about 1/1000 the cost and about 1000 times the probability of long term survival?

Not sure if wealth and power on Earth would mean much if you went to Mars to escape, money couldn’t buy you anything and if you were entitled and uncooperative you’d be a liability and possibly disposed off.

There was a proposal to build a very deep tunnel with quarters under the White House and survivable despite the numerous nukes aimed at it, (numerous for reasons of redundancy and countermeasures) they decided it was a pointless because the end result would only be that the president and staff would be buried under tons of rubble with no way of getting out or communicating.

There’s more to exploration than the cost, it’s in our blood, it’s in our DNA.
Spain was a poverty stricken shithole when Columbus set out and England wasn’t much better when Cook set sail.
Do you think saving on the cost of voyages of exploration would have made us and better off, of course not.

Feeling like a boss
Staring at the stars
Doesn’t matter the cost.

Yeah, but that’s missing the point of the video in my opinion.

The point is not that we shouldn’t be exploring Mars.

It is that Mars is very unlikely to provide a long term alternative to Earth, so if we are concerned about the potential need for such a bolt hole, we should be doing more to reduce the likelihood of that need actually arising, not less.

Perhaps it appeals to cynics who think we will wreck this planet regardless of intervention and want somewhere else to go even if the chances of survival are slim. I’d go

I wouldn’t go that far.

The Bezos/Musk approach to exploring Mars is certainly one of the things it’s about.

not exactly as I’d describe it, but yeah I question the imperative to go to Mars. Two reasons I can come up with:

Cock-waving exercise by a few billionaires, the “saving the human race” is just a convenient cover story as justification.
They have basically given up on doing anything purposeful about the environment on Earth.

Not so far as engineering is concerned. Almost no corrosion, wind load, earthquakes, snow load. And dead load that is 1/3 of that on Earth. Paradise for engineers.

if they live in habitats and a lot of their supplies need to be shipped in then i guess they would try to recycle as much as possible. or just dig a hole outside and dump it in there.

Respect is so often associated with murder. As in for instance the mafia “man of respect”.

When talking about planets, “respect” is definitely the wrong word. “Love” is a far better word in this context. “Respect” is associated with “kill or be killed”. “Love” isn’t. “Love” is associated with caring for and nurturing.
