Subject: 'Shocking': Fish stocks in Australian waters drop a third in a decade

>>Wild fish stocks in Australian waters shrank by about a third in the decade to 2015, declining in all regions except strictly protected marine zones, according to data collected by scientists and public divers.

The research, based on underwater reef monitoring at 533 sites around the nation and published in the Aquatic Conservation journal, claims to be the first large-scale independent survey of fisheries. It found declining numbers tracked the drop in total reported catch for 213 Australian fisheries for the 1992-2014 period.<<

It should have been a foregone conclusion rather than a shock.

The fish are getting smarter?

Ask an angler, fish learn to avoid getting caught.

wouldn’t say smarter if they’ve only caught on in the last 10 years.

What we really need is fallow years where no commercial fishing takes place in all oceans not just Australian waters so fish stocks astleast have some break to replenish

I have mentioned it before and thought there was good work being done on reversing what we do which is taking the big fish and throwing the little ones back. The research was the big ones are the breeders and being fish they are fecund. The better option was to throw back the big breeders and take the smaller ones. We have been doing it exactly wrong. And after all, plate size is fine.

The one that was here, is no longer around. However great concern that the rescinded (by the LNP) marine parks far offshore, might be licensed to foreign trawlers.

i used to take it seriously until i realised that after decades of manufacturing decline under the left and the right the only thing they had was house building and selling the land under their feet. the oceans are no different. just another brainless day in cloud cuckoo land.

Used to be that I could put the net out and i could catch 9 types of fish. Now I just catch salmon. I feed them to the dog. Do you want some?
