Oh GORD!
Do we have and “belching skeptics” on the forum?
What, exactly, are the causes of belching?

Dunno. I thought you were the expurt on fluid dynamics.

Interesting. I hadn’t been thinking about it from a fluid dynamics perspective.
From a psychology perspective, is belching used as a way to avoid later flatulence? Or is it a humour / social dominance thing? Are there some people who never belch?
From a mass balance perspective, is gas in equal to gas out? Four sources of stomach gas are: swallowed air, fizzy drinks, bacterial fermentation when ill, and stress. I don’t understand the chemistry of how stress causes gas, but it is associated with elevated levels of stomach acid.
Now from a fluid dynamics perspective, the movement of turbulent gas over soft tissue causes those tissues the vibrate and Helmholtz resonance of the air cavity filters amplifies a specific fundamental frequency.
There is some voluntary control over the air gap and pressure. The humour / social dominance aspect seems to be aimed at producing the deepest possible belch for the longest time. Or is it to maximise volume at the expense of duration?

Fermentation occurs whether you are ill or not. In fact, if it didn’t occur, you are likely to be ill – your gut microbial ecosystem is badly damaged.. I’m not sure fermentation is entirely bacterial, either.
