A widely-used Tuberculosis vaccine is showing very encouraging results in human trials, getting full control over the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Cool.
:)
The why information isn’t convincing. But as long as it works…
So this is just the vaccine only with no daily insulin?

“In investigating how BCG administration produces its beneficial effects, the research team identified a mechanism never previously seen in humans in response to treatment with any drug—a shifting of the process of glucose metabolism from oxidative phosphorylation, the most common pathway by which cells convert glucose into energy, to aerobic glycolysis, a process that involves significantly greater glucose consumption by cells.”

Yep.

Ta. I think I have that.

Yep.
I’m ready for whenever the GP or the Endo at FSH wants a lab rat.

For Type 1 treatment, unfortunately.

Tell him/her you’re going to travel to a country where TB is common.

“The researchers also found that BCG could reduce blood sugar elevations in mice that were caused by means other than autoimmune attack, raising the possibility that BCG vaccines could also be beneficial against type 2 diabetes.”

Oh, OK! Get a copy of the paper and give it to the Endocrinologist.
The original article was published in Nature, and is available here:
Long-term reduction in hyperglycemia in advanced type 1 diabetes: the value of induced aerobic glycolysis with BCG vaccinations. The full article is available.

I lose.
There were results back in 2012 along a similar line.
A Phase 2 trial is currently recruiting in the states, it’ll be finished in 2023 then they need to do a Phase 3 trial for registration and use on the general population.
Could always contact them to see if you could be one of the guinea pigs

Nope.
“It is important to note that all BCG-dosed subjects, for the duration of this 8-year study, especially during the 3–4 year period where they had a major drop in their HbA1c, had no change in their BMI, no change in their use of associated technologies (i.e., insulin pumps, continuous glucose meters), and no adoption of ketotic diets”
So they still received insulin, the results are still amazing though.

Ugh, see, I knew the ‘yep’ answer was not really answering the question even as I hit ‘Submit’. Thanks for digging that up, Poik. I think it’s worth saying that increased capacity to uptake glucose, and lower blood sugar levels in general, will reduce the need for Insulin.
How do we find out where this is up to?

Ahhh, yep, thanks. So that’s it? The world is waiting eight years for a single study of 150 participants?

Sorta, they were all still using their insulin etc.
