if you hold your breath for a while there’s a strong urge to inhale/exhale at some point.

you can train to hold your breath longer, but the urge is overwhelming eventually.

thinking’s not a bad distraction from breathing, fortunately the latter keeps happening, apparently with no thought at all.

is there ways the forces of culture can make conforming to its expectations similar to the force of the necessity to breathe?

spoken language is breathing, sort of nuanced breathing grunts.

I agree.
And yes – through reduction of cognitive dissonance.
But the forces of culture are not always successful – through the action of polarisation.
