Should companies who ring consumers display the name of the company along with the phone number on your screen?

It would be helpful when decided to answer or not, I don’t answer if I don’t recognise the number if its important they will leave a message or text.
Hard to do. For landlines in Australia it is up to the user to set up caller id. Back when I had a landline I had to pay extra for the service. Part of the reason why I don’t have one, I was paying extra so I could see which calls not to bother answering.
Companies can’t phone consumers if you’re on the do not call list.
But charities still can, and they’re a bloody pest. No matter how often I tell charities never to ring here again, they still do.

Scammers are the biggest problem I think, the numbers are visible when they ring me
I don’t answer and then reverse number search to see who it is.

Last time I checked, I couldn’t have caller ID on my phone. It wouldn’t help anyway because Mrs m runs a music business out of home.

They can put charities on the do not call list.

I don’t have a problem with charities phoning.
I just tell them that I don’t do charity stuff over the phone, and nearly always they say OK and move on.

So you can screen calls to send to voicemail? 😉
We live in a time of ‘spoofing’ phone numbers, so I think it’s pointless.
(For those unfamiliar with the term, spoofing is when scammers make it look like a phone number is a local or Australian number.)

exactly, charities are the most polite and ok with you saying ‘no thanks’… it’s the cold callers for insurance and remortgaging etc that have annoying scripts to follow when you say ‘no thanks’ that are worse. I usually tell them that I have nothing to do with the finances in the house and I cant help them, that usually is enough to get them off the phone.
> charities are the most polite and ok with you saying ‘no thanks’
Oh bullshit. Most of them employ the hardest sell salesmen ever.
worst part about it, for me, is I have an idea of the few people that might ring (or text) me, and for what, some of those people also have the lady’s number for whatever urgent in case I don’t answer, so any other call (unsolicited sales etc) are a departure from the list. Mobile phones only so if i’m driving I have to stop. I don’t know the urgency or time-sensitivity until I listen or read the content.
one of the biggest problems with a phone number floating around out there is similar to email addresses, you know it’s like your phone number has turned into a replicating virus and attacking you.
I don’t get many calls these days, the last was maybe few days back, they aren’t very frequent. I was very polite, delayed my responses slightly, or took out the spontaneity so the caller rightly got the impression he was intruding, then I went directly to what are you selling?.
then after a brief explanation it was we’re fairly right that way, thanks.

If you are making a living doing this, which I think most are on a commission, then you must be reasonably effective. What annoys me with charities, if you send them a donation, you get swamped with emails, correspondence and even phone calls asking for more and this also applies to reputational causes and organisations.

not in my experience
I also don’t mind telling people who come to the door that I have my set charities I donate to , so thanks but no thanks, and they back off.
the ones that get me are the ones that stand in shopping centers and say “hey, can I ask you a question?”.. to which I reply, “You just did” smile and don’t break stride…

Answer “yes I did have sexual relations with your mum/dad/significant other.” and keep walking.

I might use that. I also just tell them I have my selected charity. And sometimes I even tell them what it is.

It’s usual for charities on the phone tell me that they are my selected charity, which is a bald faced lie. Even when they mispronounce my name because they’ve read it off a spelling error in the phone book.
