Subject: Thai cave rescue: Elon Musk's SpaceX sends over a mini submarine

>>The robust submarine is built to accommodate a kid or small adult and features the liquid oxygen transfer tube of the Falcon 9 rocket as its hull. It weighs 40 kg (88 lb) when dry, so is light enough for divers to carry across dry sections of the caves. It has a diameter of 31 cm (12.2 in) and, according to Musk, is built to be pushed and pulled through the tightest parts of the system.

The submarine was constructed over around eight hours and has been put through testing in an LA pool with a person inside, including maneuvering through obstacles that replicate the cave’s narrowest passages. It is now being flown to northern Thailand. <<

Agreed. Wonder if he researched the size of the tunnels first? Wonder if he asked if they wanted him and his sub?

You would think instead of swanning around the world delivering subs he would be working on getting the Tesla factory producing product.

Apparently the sub is 300 mm diameter and the choke point is 380. So it is just a matter of what the maximum length is, or if it is bendy enough.

That’s good car, because you wouldn’t be able to get in there in the first place. So you can stop worrying.

So many people to thank apart from God.
If I had a social media account I’d thank Elon for his wonderful work, the media for their 24 hour coverage and all the experts with different views they talked to a lot and of course all the churches and congregations who’s prayers were so crucial.
And last but certainly not least are the men and women of Elon Musk’s team in California who managed to get all that equipment half way round the world at a moments notice.

It requires divers to lead the boys down a narrow tunnel, at points only .7m wide, then up to above the water level, then down another tunnel once again into a deep pool.

.7m wide

it would have be smaller than .7m

It requires divers to lead the boys down a narrow tunnel, at points only .7m wide, then up to above the water level, then down another tunnel once again into a deep pool.

.7m wide

it would have be smaller than .7m

It was 300mm wide.

It was narrow enough but could it get around the kinks or not get snagged on the “razor sharp” rocks?

Divers must dismount scuba tanks to continue.

Doesn’t sound like a sub would fit to me at least in that narrow part

so maybe some of way back from that point or wider points ?

so is only half useful .

It could carry supplies and save divers lives. It could perhaps act as oxygen backup supply on the trip out.

Yes, it could do those things.

I wonder if subs could be made more flexible so they can squeeze through at human size ?

There has to be some limit .

Wonder what material could do it ?

elon probably figured the kids were drugged and wouldn’t be aware they were in a claustrophobic metal coffin

The rumour has been squashed. They were given some anti-anxiety drug but were fully conscious the whole time.

Thai rescue boys ‘were drugged with KETAMINE’: Youngsters given doses of horse tranquiliser to stop them panicking say divers as gripping footage of underwater mission is released

One of the British divers said: ‘I was told the boys were given a dose of ketamine to keep them calm.’ An American military diver added: ‘Those kids were proper knocked out.’

Fernando Raigal, a Spanish diver who took part in the rescue, told the Mail: ‘The boys were sedated – they were unconscious.’

They seem to think that Ketamine is widely used for humans and other animals, as well as horses.

To be unfair, philanthropy causes governments to stop funding things that are in the common interest/good and allows vested interests to push their barrows where needed/wanted or else they’ll go fund something over there instead…

I read that once on an American blog, seemed sorta reasonable. Maybe I’m just too cynical atm.

USA has a long history of significant private philanthropy. Australia has a history of government-funded socialist-style common-good funding. The Australian model is slowly waning here, unfortunately.

Elton Musk “apologises” to Thai cave diver for Twitter attack

Tech con-man Elvis Musk has apologised to a British cave diver he called “pedo guy” in a row over the cave rescue in northern Thailand.

He said he had “spoken in anger” after Vern Unsworth ridiculed a mini-submarine he had commissioned for the rescue effort as a “PR stunt”.

“His actions against me (sic) do not justify my actions against him, and for that I apologise,” Mr Musk said.

Elon Musk’s submarine was supposed to extract kids from a cave.

Can his inventiveness now come up with a way for him to extract is foot from his mouth?

After that, some way to extract his head from his own arse?

Another Elon article in the Gran. What is surprising me is the comments BTL. The majority are quite scathing of Musk.

Must be a bit conflicting for the readers, on one hand he has green Eco cred on the other hand he is rich, white male and a capitalist.

I won’t say exposed, most of this has been known for a while.

In March, a Tesla driver was killed while test-driving an auto-piloted Model X, the impact fully decimating half the car.

(My emphasis.) Does that actually mean anything?

The middle 10% section of the car was removed, leaving two parts of approx 45% each.
