That is not something I had ever observed. I wonder when they became compulsory.

I can’t find a specific date. It seems they may have been optional accessories until at least the mid 1950s.

Mind you, even bikes that didn’t come with mirrors must have at least one right-side mirror now in order to be legally ridden on public roads.
