It’s all the other facilities. The TV broadcast infrastructure, the changerooms for large numbers of competitors, the crowd requirements for seating, ticketing, food/beverages, toilets, transport access and parking and all the rest of it. They had a rule of no public funding to build new faculties. Probably they had a venue that could do table tennis, but there were other sports competing for venues available. Possibly they could have had it, but then some other sport would have been dropped – and you would be here saying the same thing about the other sport that missed out.

Gary next door has a pong ping table, a few bevvies in the fridge, a webcam, and there’s a few places sorta nearby for parking. The guys can piss on the lawn as usual, and the ladies, er… there’s a few bushes down the road under the broken street light.

Pissed ping pong via webcam at Gary’s place would be a winner. No taxpayer funds required.
