It has absolutely nothing to do with Islam.

It’s banned in Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Oman etc though notably not in Saudi Arabia. Even in Saudi it is very rare and mainly practised among immigrant communities from Sudan and Somalia.

The practice stems from pre-Islamic traditions in Africa and South Asia, and continues now in Animist, Christian and Muslim communities particularly in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Guinea.
