Subject: Deer as Australian fauna.

On the news, a deer broke into a house that backs onto parkland in inner Melbourne. Suburb of Alphington, north of Kew and on the Yarra River.

I’m thinking Sambar. Another common deer species nearby that i know about is the Fallow Deer, which tends to be smaller (and resembles Bambi).

According to the news “There are four species of deer in Victoria: sambar, red, fallow and hog deer, with the sambar being the most populous in the state.”

Can anyone here confirm that this is a Sambar?

I have seen a deer in Melbourne, once, while walking in Sherbrooke forest. Not antlered. There is continuous parkland from Sherbrooke to Plenty, which is on the same stretch of Yarra River above Alphington.

Also according to the news, for every 50 cases of kangaroo home invasion around Melbourne, they get about 1 case of deer invasion.

Sambar deer antlers and distribution.

Fallow deer antlers and distribution. (Think Bambi)

Red deer antlers and distribution.

Hog deer antlers and distribution. Hog deer are even smaller than Fallow deer.

Chital deer distribution

Rusa deer distribution

Deal. When do we start?

Deer fill the same ecological niche as kangaroos. If people want to go out shooting kangaroos*, they should be made to eradicate the deer, goats, camels, foxes, cats and humans first.

  • I’m not implying that anyone here wants to shoot kangaroos.

Only some humans need to be eradicated. Those that broadly agree with me on society, economics and politics are OK to stay on.

I’ve not eaten fox, cat or human, but I’m willing to give them a go, along with deer, goat, camel and kangaroo, which I have eaten.

But of course. We need to make sure we agree with eachother before we begin this expedition…
